Pormpuraaw Arts & Cultural Centre
Pormpuraaw has a dedicated Arts & Cultural Centre, where both traditional and contemporary arts and crafts are practised. There are also displays about the history and culture of Pormpuraaw and its people. For more information visit the [ History and Culture ] section of this website.
Recently at the Arts & Cultural Centre, artists joined together to carve a traditional canoe complete with outriggers and oars. Many community members chipped in to help. All the timber was collected locally and carved by hand. Several artists tell traditional stories through their paintings using acrylics on board and canvas. Many of the works depict the animals that are totems for particular families in the community, such as the crocodile or the brolga.
Traditional baskets and dilly bags are made from the leaves of the cabbage palm found in the lands around Pormpuraaw. The dye is made from the roots of various different species of trees and is combined with ash to achieve a brilliant red color. The weaving technique is passed on from generation to generation. The objective of all activities at the Arts and Cultural Centre is to support ceremonial and cultural obligations and to maintain and foster the Mungkan and Thaayorre cultures. The proceeds from the sale of artworks go to this end. You can purchase genuine artworks from the Cultural Centre, or by calling or emailing.
